The Warden's FAQ page

FAQ stands for "frequently asked questions", and an FAQ page is a way of listing questions that get asked repeatedly. Here I plan to build up a list of the frequently asked questions I face as churchwarden, whether they be questions that others ask me, or questions which I ask myself.

  1. "When are your Sunday services?"
    Ans:
    at time of writing (15 September 2011) Holy Trinity Sunday services are as follows:

    • 0800 Prayer Book Communion (but check location; currently alternating on a monthly basis between Holy Trinity and th Cathedral);
    • 0930 Informal Service of the Word;
    • 1100 Eucharist with Robed Choir;
    • 1630 Sung Evensong.
    But notice that times vary (a) around Easter and Christmas, (b) over the summer break (late July - end August); moreover from time to time the 0930 and 1100 services meet together at some "average" time.

  2. (Often asked by people who are invited to go up to communion at the 1100 service on Sunday mornings)
    "I don't want to receive communion, just to receive a blessing. What should I do?"
    Ans: You are very welcome to go up to the rail, kneel, bow your head and place your hands down by your side. The person administering the communion will then recognize that you do not wish to receive, and will pray a brief prayer of blessing over you instead.

  3. "We want to get married at Holy Trinity Coventry. Whom should we contact, and how far in advance?"
    Ans: There is a very helpful little leaflet to be found on one of the tables at the entrance to the church, which introduces you to the process. Or look up the relevant part of the church website. Note that the booklet advises, allow at least 3 months notice!

  4. "We want to have our baby baptized at Holy Trinity Coventry. Whom should we contact?"
    Ans: There is a very helpful little leaflet to be found on one of the tables at the entrance to the church, which introduces you to the process. Or look up the relevant part of the church website.
    It's worth noting that the people who plan the services are likely to appreciate a bit of advance notice, say a month or so.

  5. "I've put myself down on the list as paying for the flowers this week. How do I do that?
    Ans:
  6. Put the money or cheque in an envelope, together with a short note saying who you are and that you want to pay for the flowers for such-and-such a week. Seal the envelope and write on it "For church flowers". Put it in the collection for your usual service. TOP
  7. "I've taken a booklet from the collection at the back of church, but there is no-one to pay for it. How do I pay?
    Ans:
  8. Put the money or cheque in an envelope. Seal the envelope and write on it "Payment for booklet ..." (add title). Put it through the slot on the top of the large chest at the back of church. TOP
  9. "Can I make a gift to a missionary through HTC and thereby allow HTC to claim giftaid?"
    Ans:
  10. Unfortunately the answer to this request has to be, thankyou but no. The reasons are as stated by the Vicar to the PCC and reported in the November 2010 update: David Mayhew made the following statement in order to clarify the position with regard to Holy Trinity’s charitable giving. “Our giving as a church is agreed by the PCC on the advice of our Mission and Charity Committee, chaired by Michael Hinman. Michael is drawing up a budget for next year, based on our usual practice of allocating a tithe of the general fund income. In addition to such annual budgeted charitable expenditure, the PCC may from time to time agree additional donations, as in the instance of the Charity Christmas Card Scheme. As I see it, we do not have the staff resources to enable members of Holy Trinity to channel their personal giving to other persons/organisations through our accounts. We would also need to be transparent and have a system in place to ensure proper approval of all such arrangements, again, we are not equipped to be able to do this. However, as Michael invited us all to consider in recent notices sheet, all church members should be encouraged to make suggestions to our giving committee as to whom and what we should be supporting as a church and to canvass support/ownership from fellow congregation/home group/support network church members.” TOP
